Budget 2018: council may revise GST of 70 items



Ahead of the announcement of the Union Budget, the GST council may cut the prices of 70 items, 40 of them being services. With the aim to boost struggling agriculture and rural economy, and encourage clean energy, the Council is expected to rationalise rates of agriculture implements and unconventional fuel buses. The GST meeting on 18th January is the last council meeting before Finance Minister Arun Jaitley presents the Budget on February 1.

With online push, Patanjali aims to overtake HUL

Ayurvedic products maker Patanjali aims to overtake Hindustan Unilever limited by the next year, media reports said. Baba Ramdev-founded Patanjali's FY17 sales amounted to Rs 10,561 crore, a third that of the listed HUL, which reported sales of Rs 34,487 crore. Recently, the Baba Ramdev led company had tied up with 8 online marketers to sell its products online.

Govt ends Haj subsidy, funds to be used for educating minorities




The central government on Tuesday withdrew the subsidy given to Haj pilgrims from 2018 onwards, saying the decision is a part of the agenda of empowerment of minorities without appeasement. The government will save an approximate 700 crores from this move. This decision comes a day after the government allowed Muslim women above the age of 45 to go to the pilgrimage without a male guardian. "Muslims didn't benefit from it. Development with dignity is what we believe in. The subsidy will be used for educating girls," Union minister Mukhtar Naqvi added.

4 dead in 24 hours in Jallikattu events across Tamil Nadu


3 deaths were registered in Jallikattu (bull taming) events across Tamil Nadu on Tuesday, a day after a 19-year-old bystander was killed in a similar fashion. Two 45-year-old spectators were killed in Sivaganga and one in Thiruchirapalli. Meanwhile, the CM E Palaniswami government has announced cars as a prize for the "best bull-tamer" and to the owner of the "most outstanding bull". Not to be outdone, rebel MLA Dhinakaran has offered air tickets to Singapore for winners of Jallikattu event in Madurai.

Haryana becomes sixth state to ban 'Padmaavat'




Haryana, on Tuesday, became the latest state to ban Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s controversial film ‘Padmaavat’ citing safety and security concerns. Announcing the ban on Twitter, Health minister Anil Vij said, “The movie had distorted all the historical facts.” The state becomes fifth in line to have shut its doors to the Deepika Padukone starrer historical drama, after Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Madhya Pradesh.

Everyone should know everything: SC on Loya's death





The Supreme Court on Tuesday told the Maharashtra government that Justice Loya’s death case is a matter where the petitioners should know everything. A bench led by Justice Arun Mishra said that nothing should remain confidential, including the medical reports. SC had asked the Maharashtra government to examine the contentions of the PILs and come back with medical reports of the judge. As these reports were handed over in a sealed envelope, the Supreme Court directed to send the reports to the 2 petitioners, Bandhuraj Sambhaji and Tehseen Poonawala.

Crisis in SC 'yet to be resolved': Attorney General Venugopal



In a drastic change of statements over the last 24 hours, Attorney General KK Venugopal admitted that the rift between the rebel judges and the Chief justice of India is still not solved, and it would take 2-3 more days for issues to be settled, on Tuesday. “Judicial crisis is not yet fully resolved. Let’s hope things will be fully settled within 2-3 days,” the Attorney General said.

Central Govt harassed me, plans to kill me: Pravin Togadia



Vishwa Hindu Parishad leader Pravin Togadia who was found from Gujarat’s Ahmedabad after missing for a day made claims of plans being made to kill him in a ‘fake encounter’. Addressing a press conference, a tearful Togadia said, “I got a tip-off from someone that a plan was made to kill me in an encounter. I am being targeted for my views on Ram Mandir, cow slaughter law.” Togadia was admitted to hospital last evening after being found unconscious in Ahmedabad, few hours after he was reported missing in the morning.

Israel boy, Moshe, survivor of 26/11 attacks returns to Mumbai



Nine years after his parents were tragically killed in the infamous 26/11 terror attacks in Mumbai, Israeli boy, Moshe Holtzberg made a return to the city. Moshe’s grandfather Rabbi Holtzberg Nachman, who accompanied the boy on his journey, said “It’s a very special day. Mumbai is a lot safer now.” Moshe’s parents Rabbi Gavriel and Rivka Holtzberg, were gunned down by members of terror outfit, Lashkar-e-Taiba in Nariman House, while he managed to survive as his Indian nanny Sandra Samuel saved him.

Sensex ends 70 points lower, Nifty at 10,700


Indian indices ended lower on Tuesday, with Sensex ending 70 points lower at 34,771. The Nifty was down 41 points at 10,700. But, IT heavyweights such as Infosys, TCS and Wipro gained after international brokerage Morgan Stanley released a report which said Indian IT is expected to a turnaround in 2018. Coal India, BHEL, and Tata power lost the most in the session.

Bitcoin slips 14% amid crackdown fears 


Bitcoin slipped as much as 14% on Tuesday to hit a four week low at $12,000. The panic spread of a regulatory crackdown after reports that South Korea’s finance minister said that banning trade in cryptocurrencies was still an option. This latest fall leaves the cryptocurrency more than 40% down from its record highs of around $20,000 in mid-December, wiping about $125 billion from its market capitalization.
