Ex-Union Minister Upendra Kushwaha joins UPA-led alliance

Days after former Union Minister and Rashtriya Lok Samta Party (RSLP) leader Upendra Kushwaha had quit the NDA citing differences with the Nitish Kumar government, Kushwaha joined the UPA-led grand alliance in Bihar on Thursday. Addressing a press conference, Kushwaha said, “The wholeheartedness shown by Rahul Gandhi and Lalu Prasad Yadav is one of the reasons that I joined the UPA.” He also slammed the NDA for turning arrogant while especially calling out Bihar CM Nitish Kumar. Kushwaha declaration of support for the grand alliance was witnessed by RJD leader Tejashvi Yadav, Hindustan Awam Morcha (HAM) leader Jitan Ram Manjhi and Congress leaders Shaktisinh Gohil and Ahmed Patil at the All Indian Congress Committee (AICC) office in Delhi.

Calcutta High Court allows BJP Rath Yatra in setback for Mamata govt

In a big win for the BJP in the state of West Bengal, the Calcutta High Court on Thursday allowed the party to hold its ‘Save Democracy’ Rath Yatra, which was earlier canceled on orders of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. Giving the verdict, the court said the procession will be carried under the guidelines of the state government while the state administration should ensure there is no law and order situation. Earlier the Mamata Banerjee government had denied permission for BJP party president Amit Shah to hold the ‘yatra’ saying it will rise to ‘communal violence’ in the area. Reacting to the court’s verdict, BJP national general secretary Kailash Vijayvargiya called it ‘a big win for the party whereas while state president Dilip Ghosh welcomed it too.

2 people arrested for kidnapping, gang rape of UP BTech student

The Uttar Pradesh police on Thursday arrested two people in connection with the kidnapping and gang rape of a BTech student by four men in Agra that happened on Wednesday. Speaking about the case, Senior Superintendent of police Amit Pathak told news agencies, "The father of the woman lodged an FIR according to which, the woman reached a busy street when four men in a motorcycle forced her to sit between them and drove off." During the investigation, the victim’s family also identified one of the accused as a vegetable vendor they knew. The same accused upon interrogation reportedly revealed names of the other three involved in the heinous crime.

Madhya Pradesh: Kamal Nath favours giving jobs to locals

Newly elected Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Kamal Nath whp drew a lot of criticism over his controversial remarks about providing 70% job reservation to locals in the state. defended his stand  on Thursday saying such policy is prevalent in other states. Defending his statements, Nath told reporters, “Such a policy exists in other states also. Is it not there in Gujarat? What is new in it? Local people should get preference." Following his comments, the issue was raised in the parliament by the BJP lawmakers and a complaint was lodged against him for inciting hatred against people of other states. Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav also expressed sharp criticisms on Nath's comment and said, “This is wrong. In Maharashtra you hear questions like why have north Indians come here. Now this is coming from Madhya Pradesh!"

Lalu Prasad gets interim bail in IRCTC scam case

Delhi's Patiala Court on Thursday granted a short-term bail to former Bihar Chief Minister and Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief Lalu Prasad Yadav till January 2019 in connection with two Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) cases. Lalu who is currently serving a jail term in the Fodder Scam case at Ranchi, appeared before the court through video conference as he was unable to visit the national capital due to health reasons. The case is being heard by special judge Arun Bharadwaj after the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and Enforcement Directorate (ED) had allegedly found irregularities in granting contracts to a certain Sujata hotel, a private organisation to open and operate two hotels in Ranchi and Puri in 2005. Earlier Lalu’s wife and former Chief Minister Rabri Devi, along with their son Tejashwi Yadav were arrested in the IRCTC scam case on charges of criminal conspiracy (120-B) and cheating (420) of the Indian penal code but were later granted bail.
