Delhi Air Pollution: Private vehicles to bear the burnt, Govt mulls odd-even

Delhi’s fast deteriorating air quality fell under 'very poor' category on Thursday and will further worsen in the coming 10 days news reports quoting concerned authorities cautioned. The Supreme Court-appointed Environment Pollution Control Authority (EPCA) has given a restraining order against private vehicles starting November 1 considering it forms 40% of the pollution while the state is mulling bringing back the Odd-Even rule. Meanwhile, hospitals also reported a surge in the number of patients and doctors advised children to be kept indoors or wear a mask while going out. “Delhi government is fully prepared to take measures as per Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP), including the odd-even scheme are concerned,” a report by News18 said while quoting State Transport Minister Kailash Gehlot.

No one can scrap reservation: Bihar CM Nitish Kumar

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Wednesday said ‘no one in this country has the power to scrap the provision of reservation’ and said he is ready to make any sacrifice for the same. Addressing a conclave of Scheduled Tribes and Scheduled Castes workers of his party Janata Dal-United (JDU) in Gaya, Kumar said, Ambedkar’s [draft of] Constitution was approved by the Constituent Assembly. The provision for reservation was made to help the marginalized sections join the social mainstream.” He further added that JDU had started reservations in village panchayats for SCs in 2006 and also provided 50% quota for women in panchayats and lauded his government for launching various schemes for the welfare of minority and weaker sections of the society.

India protests against China-Pakistan bus route through POK

Alleging a violation on its territorial integrity, India on Thursday strongly protested against the purposed bus route of Pakistan and China, which will pass through Pakistan occupied Kashmir (POK). The route beginning from November 13 under the project of China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) will be serviced from Lahore in Pakistan to Kashgar in China. Reacting to the news, External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson Raveesh Kumar said, "the Indian government has never recognized the China-Pakistan boundary agreement of 1963 and that is illegal and invalid.” The CPEC was first developed in 2015 to connect China’s Xinjiang Uyghur region with Pakistan's Gwadar port in Balochistan, keeping in view to strengthen the economic ties between the countries.

GST collection crossed Rs 1 lakh crore mark in October 2018

As per the financial statement released on Thursday, the good service tax (GST) crossed Rs 1 lakh crore mark for the second time in the month of October 2018. Earlier the GST crossed Rs 1 lakh crore in April and the current collection rate will help the central government to meet the expenses in the fiscal budget. The massive rise in collection of GST came from states like Maharashtra (11%), Rajasthan (14), Jharkhand (20%), Kerala (44%) and Uttarakhand (13%). Finance Minister Arun Jaitely tweeted on his microblogging site Twitter that “the success of GST is lower rates, lesser evasion, higher compliance, only one tax and negligible interference by taxation authorities.” The GST came into effect from July 1, 2017, and it is a single tax for supplying of goods and services.

Andhra Pradesh CM Chandrababu Naidu meets Rahul Gandhi in Delhi

Ahead of the state elections, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu travelled to Delhi to meet Congress President Rahul Gandhi on Thursday to form an alliance against Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP). Earlier Naidu’s father in law had severed all relations with Congress in 1980 with an aim to defeat the Congress party and established a reign of Telugu Desam Party (TDP) in the state in 1983. Both the leaders met during the swearing-in ceremony of Chief Minister of Karnataka H D Kumaraswamy and on Thursday for the first time in the history they held a formal meeting together. Naidu also met National Congress Party Chief Sharad Pawar and National Conference President Farooq Abdullah and discussed a grand alliance to take over BJP. Further, Naidu said that "Congress is the main principle Opposition party. There is a need to chalk out a programme for the future. We must act in the interest of the nation.”
