Virat Kohli, Mirabai Chanu awarded with Khel Ratna by President

India men’s cricket team captain Virat Kohli and weightlifter Saikhom Mirabai Chanu were awarded the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award at the hands of President Ram Nath Kovind on Tuesday. Star javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra, who won gold medals in the Commonwealth and Asian Games this year, and junior world champion sprinter Hima Das were among the 20 sportspersons who received the Arjuna Awards from President Ram Nath Kovind here. The ceremony, which is traditionally held on August 29 to commemorate the birth anniversary of hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand, was pushed to September 25 this year to avoid a clash of dates with the 18th Asian Games in Jakarta and Palembang. Kohli is the third cricketer to be honored with the Khel Ratna after batting legend Sachin Tendulkar (1997-1998) and former captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni (2007).

SC refuses to disqualify politicians facing criminal charges

The Supreme Court on Tuesday refused to disqualify politicians with criminal records however asked political parties to publish the criminal antecedents of the candidates on their website and publicize it. Putting the onus on the parliament, the apex court said that the decision of whether the lawmakers with criminal records should be barred from contesting elections or should they be disqualified only after conviction, should be left to the parliament. The court also suggested that it is the duty of the parliament to give to ensure that the society is governed by better people and hence it should make a law to bar those accused of crimes from contesting elections. A five-judge bench comprising of Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra, Justice RF Nariman, AN Khanwilkar, DY Chandrachud, and Indu Malhotra pronounced the verdict.

Union Minister changes his name to save Sanatan Dharma


Union Minister Giriraj Singh on Tuesday took to social media site Twitter to announce that he is changing his name after a Sadhu in an attempt to save the Sanatan Dharma. The BJP leader, who represents Nawada Lok Sabha seat in Bihar said that he is switching his name to Shandilya Giriraj Singh after a sage named Shandilya. “To save the country, Sanatana has to be saved and to save Sanatan, we will have to treat the oath shown by sages and seers and attach ourselves to our respective Gothras. From today I change my name to Shandilya Giriraj Singh, after Rishi Shandilya. I request all Sanatanis to prefix their Gothras to their names”, Singh tweeted in Hindi.

EC orders probe after video of Muslim pledging support to TRS surfaces

The Election Commission on Tuesday ordered probe in the Telugu Rashtri Samiti (TRS) party after a video viral on social media showed a group of Muslims pledging their support to party chief and Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao for the upcoming assembly polls. The concerned video showed the group in a mosque declaring their support for KCR while state Transport minister Patnam Mahender Reddy is also present. Reacting to the controversy, Chief Electoral Officer Rajat Kumar told media agencies that the district electoral officer has been asked to give a report on the same. Meanwhile, opposition Congress party called out TRS for their alleged ‘cheap tricks’. The state government called for fresh elections after CM KCR had dissolved the state assembly on September 6.

12 dead, 22 surgeries stopped as doctors Patna Medical College goes on strike

At least 12 people were reported dead and 22 surgeries of immediate urgency were not conducted within 24 hours as the junior doctors of Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) observed a strike for the second day on Tuesday over Monday’s incident of a relative of a patient physically abusing a doctor. The strike led to a sudden stop in consultation and emergency services as the doctors did not report to duty. As per news report by Hindi news agency Prabhat Khabar, relatives of a 12-year-old patient manhandled pediatrician Deenanath Singh since they wanted the child to be discharged and moved to a private hospital but PMCH denied permission.
