The Supreme Court on Thursday lashed out at Aadhaar issuing agency UIDAI and said that unique identification code cannot stop banks frauds that have become way too frequent in the past few years. On Wednesday, the apex body made the statement against a submission made by Attorney General KK Venugopal, who is representing the government which had claimed that Aadhaar can ‘check money laundering and delivers subsidies and benefits’. The five-member bench headed by Chief Justice of India Dipak Mishra observed that Aadhaar can be of little help to detect frauds, as banks already know whom they are giving the loan to. “Frauds take place because bank officials are hand-in-glove with the fraudster. Aadhaar can do little to stop it," the bench said.

Banks are billing you for SMS alerts against RBI Advisory
Neglecting an advisory by the Reserve Bank of India, banks and financial institutions are charging customers for SMS alerts on transactions, the Economic Times reported on Thursday. The RBI had earlier told banks to send SMS alerts for each transaction in a bid to fight frauds and asked the banks to levy charges on an actual usage basis. But, 19 out of 48 banks, including the SBI and the ICICI bank are not adhering to the norm. The report suggested that these banks levy a fixed quarterly charge of Rs 15, which on taxation goes up to Rs 17.7 at present. But, the regulatory body Banking Codes and Standards of India (BCSBI) cannot intervene to help out the customers if such rates are notified to the customers in time.________________________________
