Will it bring welfare?: LS speaker Sumitra Mahajan questions indefinite reservation

Speaking on the issue of reservation for backward classes, Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan slammed the idea of the quota for an indefinite period in education and job sector, questioning whether it will serve a purpose. Addressing a gathering during the Lok Manthan Programme in Jharkhand on Sunday she said, “The idea of Ambedkarji was to bring social harmony by introducing reservation for 10 years but we extend the reservation every 10 years. There is a shortcoming.” Mahajan added that there is a need for debate and discussion on the issue over the welfare it brings for the country. Mahajan’s statement comes at a time when the Supreme Court, while ruling on the case of SC/ST reservation on promotion in government jobs last week, had refused the central government’s plea that overall population of SC/ST be considered for granting quota for them.
