Sec 377 verdict: Bollywood welcomes it, Subramanian Swamy disapproves
The Supreme Court on Thursday gave the historic verdict of scrapping the 156-year-old Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) that decriminalized homosexuality, releasing a series of reactions from different strata of society. Bollywood celebrities like filmmaker Karan Johar, actress Sonam Kapoor among others hailed the verdict. Congress Lok Sabha member Shashi Tharoor who had earlier tried to introduce the private member’s bill but was rejected by the majority NDA called the verdict a ‘dawn’ for India. Meanwhile, a staunch critic of homosexuality and gay rights, BJP leader Subramanian Swamy claimed the verdict could give rise to increase in HIV cases, gay bars, etc. “This judgment can be overturned by a seven-judge bench,” he added.

Bharat Bandh disrupts life In Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Rajasthan, UP, Maharashtra
Demonstrators took to streets forcing locals to stay indoors during the ongoing Bharat Bandh on Thursday morning. They are protesting against the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act that provides protections to the SC and ST community. Reports of violence emerged from parts of Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Jharkhand, and Maharashtra. Section 144 of CrPc has been imposed in most parts of the state in view of the bandh call and 34 units of the special armed force of police have been deployed in various districts. Schools and petrol pumps will remain shut across districts and internet services are likely to be affected. Shops, business establishments, schools, and other educational institutions also remained closed due to the bandh.

Army chief General Bipin Rawat said on Wednesday that if Pakistan stops cross-border terrorism, India will have no hesitation in extending its hand of friendship to it like Asian Games Gold medalist Neeraj Chopra. He made the statement referring to the Asian Games javelin gold medallist's gesture of reaching out to his Pakistani competitor. Indian javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra displayed sportsman spirit when he bowed his head and shook hands with Pakistan’s bronze medallist Arshad Nadeem during the medal distribution ceremony at the recently-concluded Asian Games in Indonesia, Rawat reiterated India’s position by asking Pakistan to stop sponsoring terror from across the border. “Let Pakistan take the initiative first by stopping cross-border terror. If they manage to stop terrorism from their side, we will act like Neeraj Chopra,” Rawat told reporters on the sidelines of a felicitation ceremony for the Army athletes.

Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan on Thursday while addressing the Defence Day celebrations in Pakistan said that he wants to promote mutual cooperation with other countries, including its neighbors, on the basis of equality. He also mentioned that it is imperative to find a solution to the Kashmir issue under the UN resolutions for peace in the region. Pakistan observes September 6 as the Defence Day to mark the anniversary of the 1965 war with India. "The people of Pakistan will leave no stone unturned in defending their motherland while standing side by side with [the] valiant armed forces of the country," he was quoted as saying.
