Choksi appears on video message from Antigua, calls all charges 'baseless'

Fugitive jeweler and uncle of Punjab National Bank’s (PNB) Rs 13,000 crore fraud accused Nirav Modi, Mehul Choksi on Tuesday uploaded a video message, saying the charges against him are false. In the video that features Choksi and his lawyer asking him questions, it appears to be have been from Antigua. Accusing the Enforcement Directorate (ED) ‘falsely’ framing him, Choksi said, “ED have attached my property illegally without there being any basis of the same." Choksi further also displayed agitation with the regional Passport office for canceling his passport. “I did not receive any reply from passport office, further the Regional Passport Office did not give any reason as to how I was a security threat to India," Choksi said.

2 LeT militants killed in J&K's Kupwara

The Indian army successfully eliminated two Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) militants in an encounter that started in the morning hours of Tuesday in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kupwara district. The two deceased were identified as Furqan Rashid Lone alias Adil and Liyaqat Ahmad Lone alias Sahaba alias Umar Khalid who were both locals and were wanted in a number of criminal cases. The clash started as the security forces who were on a search operation when the militants fired on them and the gunfight ensued. The incident comes a local man was shot dead by unidentified assailants on Monday night. No terror group has taken responsibility for the murder as of now.

Telangana Congress leader Jagga Reddy arrested for passport fraud

Former MLA and senior Telangana Congress leader T Jayprakash Reddy (also known as Jagga Reddy) was arrested by Hyderabad police on Tuesday on charges of alleged human trafficking and carrying fake passports. The police arrested Reddy from Patancheru and later took him to the Market police station, Secunderabad for questioning. Reddy had obtained a passport for himself, his wife Nirmala, daughter Jayalaxmi, and son Bharat Sai Reddy in 2004 when he was the Sangareddy MLA from the Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) party, according to the Hindu. He later allegedly affixed photos of three other persons on those passports, obtained U.S. visas and flew to New York with them, claiming that they were his family members. The Congress condemned this arrest and alleged that TRS is misusing its power by arresting opposition leaders just before elections.

Quick to hug PM but runs away from IT officers: Smriti Irani on Rahul Gandhi

Union minister Smriti Irani on Tuesday attacked Congress president Rahul Gandhi, for challenging the IT department's decision to reopen his 2011-12 tax assessments, in a press conference in Delhi. “Why is it that Mr Rahul Gandhi, who is too quick to hug the prime minister, would run a mile when it comes to an Income Tax officer,” Irani asked, referring to the Congress president hugging Modi in the Lok Sabha during the no-confidence debate in July. She accused Rahul Gandhi of setting up a not-for-profit company, Young Indians, which then bought a commercial company, Associated Journals Ltd, and its debts worth Rs 90 crore for Rs 50 lakh. “Rahul Gandhi set up a company in 2011, professing it will not indulge in profit-loss business. Young Indian bought Associated Journals, which is commercial,” she said, questioning the deal.

Telangana bus accident: Death toll rises to 52, govt announces Rs 5 lakh for kin of dead

52 people, including seven children, were killed and several others were injured after a state-run road transport corporation bus overturned and fell into a valley in Telangana's Jagitial district on Tuesday morning. Telangana Finance Minister Etela Rajender told ANI that an ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakh has been announced for the families by Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao. "45 people have died so far. Injured have been admitted to nearby government hospitals. "The bus was coming from Shanivarampet to Jagitial and was completely overloaded. After reaching Kondagattu, which is a ghat road, the bus lost control and fell down, killing 23 persons on the spot," said Jagitial Revenue Divisional Officer G Narendhar. "The survivors say that they were petrified and yelling in panic after the bus was about to fall. We suspect that the bus' brakes failed," he added.
