5 dead, 20 injured in mass shooting at Maryland newspaper office

At least five people were killed and 20 were injured in a mass shooting at the offices of the Capital Gazette, a daily newspaper published in Annapolis, the capital of Maryland in US on Thursday. A suspect has been taken into custody and police are were working to secure the building at 3.30pm. Phil Davis, a court and crime reporter for the Gazette, confirmed that multiple people had been shot. Davis said that a lone gunman had shot through the glass door of the offices and then opened fire on the newspaper employees. 'A single shooter shot multiple people at my office, some of whom are dead,' he tweeted, while he said he was waiting to be interviewed by police.

Complete integration of face authentication for Aadhaar by 10 July: UIDAI

The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has asked biometric device manufactures to complete integration of face authentication with registered devices by 10 July. Facial recognition was to be made available on registered devices from 1 July but the deadline was extended by a month as UIDAI needed more time to prepare for the rollout. The move is aimed at ensuring that certified registered biometric devices needed to facilitate face authentication are available with the banks and other financial institutions before 1 August, the date of implementation of face authentication. “Since face photo is already available in UIDAI database there is no need to capture any new reference data and camera is pervasively available on laptops and mobiles, making the face capture feasible for AUAs without requiring additional hardware,” said the circular by UIDAI.

CBI charges Jatin Mehta, two former Canara Bank officials

The Central Bureau of Investigation on Thursday filed a charge sheet against Winsome Diamonds promoter Jatin Mehta, two former chairmen and managing directors (CMDs) of the Canara Bank and others for allegedly cheating the bank of ₹146 crore. According to the CBI, the company had bought gold from three overseas bullion banks, the Bank of Nova Scotia, Standard Bank and Standard Chartered Bank, on the guarantees extended by the Indian bank. The gold was then processed and sold to buyers in UAE. The total amount involved in the alleged scam is said to be more than ₹6,000 crore.

India preparing for reduction in oil imports from Iran

The oil ministry held a meeting with refiners on Thursday and asked them to look for alternatives to Iranian oil, as reported by media sources. The oil ministry has asked refiners to prepare for a 'drastic reduction or zero' imports of Iranian oil from November. The move is considered the first sign that New Delhi is responding to a push by the United States to cut trade ties with Iran. Industry sources revealed to the media that India biggest buyer of Iranian oil after China, will be forced to take action to protect its exposure to the US financial system.

Bird-hit causes Air India flight to make emergency landing

An Air India flight bound for Delhi had to make an emergency landing at the Patna airport reportedly due to a bird hit. AI 410, with 124 passengers, was forced to make an emergency landing at Patna's Jay Prakash Narayan Airport - from where it took off - after a bird-hit caused one of the engines to develop a snag. This is the second major aerial scare on Indian skies on Thursday after a chartered flight crashed in Mumbai, killing five.

Shujaat Bukhari Killing: J&K police confirms Pakistan's participation

The Jammu and Kashmir police on Thursday confirmed that the murder of local newspaper editor Shujaat Bukhari was planned in Pakistan and monitored by the terror outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT). Addressing a press conference, Inspector General of Police SP Pani said, “We have tangible evidence to establish these were done from Pakistan. The evidence we have in co-operation of service providers is that they belong to Pakistan,” adding that the accused were trained by top LeT commander Sajjad Gul. IGP Pani released photographs and identification of the 4 alleged shooters, one of them being Pakistani terrorist Naved Jutt, who had escaped from the state police custody in February this year.

Ghatkopar Plane Crash: Pilot saved lives at the cost of her own

The woman pilot of the Beechcraft King Air C90 that crashed in Mumbai's Ghatkopar on Thursday swerved the plane to a lesser crowded area and saved a lot of lives, however, lost her own. The information came into light after former Civil Aviation Minister and Nationalist Congress Party leader Praful Patel lauded the pilot through a tweet. The plane took off from the Juhu Aerodrome for a test flight, with two pilots and two maintenance engineers. It crashed a little after 1 pm, killing all four on board and a man passing nearby. "Salute to the pilot who showed presence of mind to avoid a big mishap, saving many lives at the cost of her own life. #RIP to all the 5 Dead. My deepest condolences," the former Union minister tweeted.

CBSE directs schools to suspend teachers if found miscalculating board marks

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) on Thursday directed all of its affiliated schools to suspend any teacher who is found guilty of miscalculating marks in board exams. The education board took the decision a day after it had suspended five academicians, three from a government school and two from a private one, based in Delhi after reevaluation found that few students had got 50-55 marks less. Moreover, not just teachers but even ‘schools will be served notices over mistakes in calculations’, news reports said quoting CBSE officials. As per news reports, the CBSE is soon going to disqualify more teachers from Allahabad and Dehradun next.

Saudi TV presenter flees country after being 'hunted' over indecent clothing

A Saudi Arabian TV reporter has sparked controversy after her robe blew off while presenting a live news prompting her to flee the country following a state investigation that termed it as ‘indecent dressing’. Shireen al-Rifaie who works for Dubai-based Al Aan TV was reporting the news of driving ban being lifted for Saudi women when her abaya flew off due to the wind, revealing her top and jeans underneath. Rifaie’s dress code was infamously targeted on social media with the hashtag ‘#Naked_Woman_Driver_In_Riyadh’ after which it came under government scrutiny, the Saudi General Commission for Audiovisual Media told news agencies. As per Arab based news site, Ajel, Rifaie shared images of a flight ticket and her passport on Snapchat, quoting “I was wearing decent clothes, and God will reveal the truth of what has been said to me.”

Cong, BJP clash over Surgical strike videos, question each other’s credibility


The BJP and Congress on Thursday waged a war of words against each other over the 2016 Surgical strike videos that show the Indian army’s attack, on terrorists, with the political parties accusing each other of ‘publicizing’ its cause. With the broadcast of the videos on national news channels on Wednesday evening, Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala accused the ruling party of using the ‘Army’s valour’ for their own cause. “Modi government is exploiting the slogan of 'Jai Jawan Jai Kisan' and trying to win votes through Surgical Strike,” Surjewala said while addressing a press conference. Meanwhile, the BJP has hit out at the criticism saying the Congress is making the terrorists glad with such statements. "Once Rahul Gandhi called surgical strikes "Khoon ka dalali (trading on the sacrifices of soldiers)," he said. Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad too retorted to Surjewala’s remarks and said their leaders have used some very shameful terms against the army chief.”
