32 teams, 31 days, 1 goal: FIFA World Cup 2018 win
The 2018 edition of the biggest football tournament, the Fédération Internationale de Football Association, more popularly known as FIFA is set to begin today, June 14, in Russia as the ‘most expensive football championship in history.' The all-men tournament featuring over 32 qualified teams from across the world will be competing till 15 July. Hosts Russia, who are currently at a low 70th position in the FIFA World rankings will be seeking to improve their performance while winners of 2014 and four time title holder Germany will look to revive their victory. The first match will feature the host, Russia against Saudi Arabia at Moscow's Luzhniki Stadium, with the official soothsayer of the tournament, Achilles- the cat, predicting Russia's win.

New Zealand’s 17-year-old becomes youngest run scorer in women’s ODI
17-year-old Amelia Kerr of New Zealand’s women cricket team created history on Wednesday as she scored the highest runs ever in women’s one-day (ODI) cricket smashing a 21 year world record. Kerr secured an unbeaten 232 against Ireland in the ongoing series at Dublin. Earlier Australia’s Belinda Clark had scored a 229 against Denmark in 1997. Kerr is also on her way to set a world record in both men and women’s cricket as according to a news report, ‘India men's player Rohit Sharma is at the top of the pile with his 264 scored against Sri Lanka in 2014, with the unbeaten 237 made by New Zealand's Martin Guptill, against West Indies in 2015, holding second spot.’ The teenager also became the youngest international player to record a double centurion.

In a fresh incident related to mob justice against alleged cattle smuggling, the police arrested five people for beating two men to death in Godda district of Jharkhand on Wednesday. The two victims, identified as Sirabuddin Ansari (35) and Murtaza Ansari (30) were allegedly part of a gang that stole buffaloes. As per the villagers account by news reports, the duo were caught stealing 13 buffaloes when they were held and thrashed to death. The incident comes few days after cases of mob lynching killed two people each in Maharashtra and Assam, however in suspicion of being child kidnappers.

US sets 2.5 years deadline for North Korea’s denuclearisation
After the highly successfully termed meeting between the US President and the North Korean leader, the Americans have set a deadline of two and half years for North Korea to denuclearise itself a decided in the summit. The decision came just a day after President Donald Trump and the Supreme leader Kim Jong-un held a summit in Singapore’s Sentosa island and called it a positive meeting. “There is still a great deal of work to do with North Korea. Major disarmament... We're hopeful that we can achieve that in the two and half years," US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo was quoted by news agencies in South Korea. Vajpayee stable now but no discharge yet, says AIIMS
Former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee continued his stay at the All India Institute of Medical sciences (AIIMS) for the third day but his health improved back to a great deal. Presiding doctor and AIIMS director Randeep Guleria said in an statement on Wednesday, “His kidney function is back to normal, heart rate,respiratory rate and blood pressure also normal, they're being maintained without support. Hopefully he'll make full recovery in next few days, overall his health is good.” It was earlier reported that the Bharat Ratna awardee leader had got a Urinary tract infection contradicting the press statement of BJP on Monday that the leader was admitted merely for a regular check-up.____________
Facebook admits tracking mouse movements, data storage of users
Global social media giant, Facebook on Wednesday agreed that it had tracked on users through mouse movements and storage space, in a response to the questions put forward by the US Senate Committee. In its defence, Facebook said it keeps the data of mouse movements ‘to help its algorithms differentiate between humans and bots and also to determine if the browser window that has Facebook loaded is in the foreground or background of a user’s screen.’ The admission come months after Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg was questioned by the US Senators on a televised hearing, on the data theft from user profiles after it was found that US based data analytics company Cambridge analytics was politically influencing social media users.____________
Kejriwal leads Day 3 of dharna against L-G, calls it his 'surgical strike'
The political tussle in Delhi continued for the third day as Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and his team of ministers stay put at Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal’s office and began a dharna seeking a return of IAS officers who were on strike. Former BJP minister Yashwant Sinha also joined the protest rally in support of AAP. “This ‘dharna’ (protest) is my surgical strike against those who want to punish the voters of Delhi," Kejriwal said in an exclusive interview to NDTV. Accusing the Modi government of playing an active part in the ongoing tussle between AAP and Baijal, Kejriwal said the IAS officers as "tools" to "scuttle good work done by Delhi govt." Kejriwal along with Deputy CM Manish Sisodia and two other ministers had been protesting since Monday. Meanwhile, the Delhi unit of BJP also took out a rally outside Kejriwal’s office, over irregular water and power supply.

Congress wins Karnataka's Jayanagar by 4,000 votes
The Congress party increased its tally of seats to 79 in Karnataka, by winning the assembly election of Bengaluru’s Jayanagar constituency on Wednesday, the polls for which were held on June 11. The Karnataka assembly elections were held on May 12, but the polls in Jayanagar were deferred due to the death of BJP candidate BN Vijayakumar. Congress' winning candidate was first-timer Sowmya Reddy, daughter of former Home Minister Ramalinga Reddy. Sowmya defeated BJP’s BN Prahlad, brother of late Vijayakumar and emerged victorious by almost 4,000 votes as she received 54,457 votes, against the BJP’s 51,568. Crediting her father for the success, Reddy said: "this is a victory of the party, the party workers and the people of Jayanagar."

Retail inflation reaches four-month high in May
Consumer Price Index (CPI) or Retail inflation increased to a four-month high in the month of May due to the higher cost of fuel and increase in prices of food articles according to official data released by the Central Statistics Office released on Tuesday. Consumer price inflation stood at 4.87 percent in May compared with 4.58 percent in April. Retail inflation in India rose in May just a week after the Reserve Bank of India hiked benchmark interest rates for the first time in four years in an effort to fend off inflationary pressures. The food and beverages segment saw inflation accelerating to 3.37% in May, from 3% in April, while inflation in the fuel and light segment at 5.8%, compared with 5.16% in the previous month.
