Seven Indians kidnapped by armed men in Afghanistan 


Seven engineers working for a power plant in Baghlan province, Afghanistan were kidnapped by unknown armed men on Sunday. While no official ransom call has been made, according to news reports, terror group Taliban abducted the Indians ‘mistakenly’, thinking they were Afghan government officials. "Seven Indians and an Afghani national have been abducted in Baglan. They were engineers with electricity company KEC International Ltd. Our sources told us they are still alive,” Baghlan government said. Reacting to the incident, the Ministry of External Affairs said, “We are aware of the abduction of Indian nationals and we are in contact with the Afghan authorities.”

Five Terrorists including Hizbul Commander gunned down in J&K encounter 

In a major breakthrough for security forces, five terrorists including top Hizbul Mujaheedin commander Saddam Paddar was killed in an encounter that broke out early morning in Shopian district of Jammu and Kashmir. Two security personnel have been injured in the gunfire. The gunfight started after security forces launched a cordon and search operation in Badigam village, said an police official. They had launched the search operation after getting information about the presence of militants in the village.

BSF jawan kills self and 3 colleagues in Tripura

A jawan of the Border Security Force (BSF) posted in Tripura killed three of his colleagues and then killed himself on Saturday night. The bodies were recovered on Sunday. Deceased Shishu Pal of the 55th Battalion, who was a resident of Jammu and Kashmir, first shot three jawans including a head constable, before shooting himself with his service weapon, a BSF spokesperson was quoted in news reports. While no immediate reason has been found yet, reports suggest personal disputes were possibly behind the shootings. The incident comes after that of last December when a jawan of the Central Reserve Police Forces (CRPF) posted in Chhattisgarh opened fire at his colleagues, with an AK-47 rifle after an argument, killing three superiors and a constable.

Karnataka Polls 2018: Yeddyurappa defends BJP’s ticket to Reddy brothers 


BJP Chief Ministerial candidate BS Yeddyurappa on Sunday, defending his party’s move to give tickets to tainted mining barons brothers said that he is aware of their history but they need to win seats in the state. "I am not forgetting the past incidents of Reddy brothers. I know what had happened when I was the chief minister. I will be careful," the former CM said. BJP has fielded G Somashekhara Reddy from Ballari city and his elder brother and former Ballari Lok Sabha member G Karunakara Reddy in Harappanahalli from Davanagere district. Another Janardhan Reddy has been banned from entering Ballari in light of the illegal mining case going against him on which he is out on bail, but is camping vigorously for his brothers and the BJP in the nearby constituency of Chitradurga.

Hawaii: Thousands flee after earthquake triggers new volcano eruptions


Nearly 500 earthquakes, including one of magnitude 6.9 on the Richter scale, shook parts of Hawaii since Friday, a day after the Kilauea volcano erupted, the United States Geological Survey said. Scientists have predicted more eruptions and earthquakes for months to come, said media reports. No one has been injured but several homes were destroyed in the biggest earthquake on the Pacific island since 1975. Outbreaks of lava from the eruptions can reach temperatures of 1,150 degrees Celsius, the Hawaii County Civil Defense Agency said. The Hawaii Fire Department reported, “extremely dangerous air quality conditions due to high levels of sulphur dioxide gas”.
