Aadhaar Controversy: Press clubs back daily after UIDAI files FIR


Press bodies across the nation including The Editors Guild of India joined forces to condemn the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) filing an FIR against a Punjab based English daily.  UIDAI deputy director BM Patnaik on Sunday reported The Tribune newspaper and its reporter Rachna Khaira for an alleged case of misreporting. The concerned article, titled, 'Rs 500, 10 minutes and you have access to billion Aadhaar details' published on January 4, had reported how a network of illegal group tapping may have sold the database of billion users. The Guild went on to call UIDAI's action 'a direct attack on the freedom of the press.'

Man arrested on charges of harassing Sachin Tendulkar's daughter


A 32 year old man was arrested on charges of stalking and harassing daughter of legendary cricketer and parliamentarian Sachin Tendulkar’s daughter, Sara. The West Bengal police on Sunday nabbed the accused Debkumar Maity from East Midnapore, after Sara had lodged a complaint in Bandra Police station of receiving over 20 calls, professing love and threatening to kidnap her. Maity told the police, "I saw her on TV, fell in love and wanted to marry her. I fetched the landline number of Tendulkar and have called on it some 20 times.” Maity’s family, in his defense said that he is mentally unstable.

UP govt holds contractor guilty for saffron walls of Haj House


Reacting to the controversy of painting the walls of the Haj Committee Office in bright saffron paint, the BJP led Uttar Pradesh government, blamed the contractor in-charge for the action. Releasing a statement, Secretary of the Committee, JP Singh said, “On inspecting the boundary wall of the office, it was found that there has been laxity by the contractor and a dark shade of paint has been used contrary to the instructions issued". On Saturday the walls of the Haj House had been repainted to its original off-white shade, following protests of alleged ‘saffronisation’ from the staff.

Delhi: Bad fog conditions kills five athletes in car accident


Four national level powerlifting players and one World Champion weightlifter were killed in a car accident that happened on the wee hours of Sunday morning at the Delhi- Haryana border. The car suffered an effect as it hit a divider and crashed into an electricity pole due to low visibility pertaining to fog conditions. Saksham Yadav, who had won a gold medal in the 2017 weight-lifting championship for the country in Moscow was bought injured to Shalimar Bagh's Max Hospital but by the evening, he succumbed to his injuries and was declared dead. As the national capital's air quality continues to show no sign of improvement, the MET has predicted that the cold weather conditions will intensify by next week.

Fire at Mumbai's Shiv Shakti Estate, fifth incident in 10 days


Another fire accident was reported from the city of Mumbai on Sunday when the first floor of Shiv Shakti Industrial Estate, in Lower Parel was gutted with fire. The three storied building was however, secured as fire tenders rushed to the spot and no casualties was reported. The fire accident has been the fifth one for the city, since the infamous Kamala Mills fire that killed 14 people, took place on December 28, 2017. On Saturday, the Cinevistas Studio in Kanjumarg Area was also gutted in a blaze, burning the set of an upcoming Indian TV series. CM Devandra Fadnavis has ordered police inquiry on the incident.

'Willing' to talk to Kim Jong: US Pres Donald Trump


US president Donald Trump on Sunday expressed that he is willing to talk with rival leader and North Korean supremo, Kim Jong Un over the phone. In his address to the media, Trump said, “Surely I believe in conversation and of course I will do that” adding that every conversation comes with a condition. The move has come ahead of the talks that are scheduled to be held between the North Korea and South Korea for the Winter Olympics that will be hosted by Seoul. "If something can come out of those talks, that would be a great thing for the world,” Trump added.

Iranian oil tankers burns in China's coast, crew goes missing


An Iranian oil tanker was set on fire after colliding with a Hong Kong bulk ship and went on to spill oil off the East China Sea coast. The 32 member crew of the tanker, 2 of who were Bangladeshi and the rest Iranians are missing. The Panama registered Sanchi tanker was travelling from Iran to South Korea, carrying 136,000 tonnes of crude oil when it hit CF Crystal about 160 nautical miles off Shanghai. “There is an oil slick and we are pushing forward with rescue efforts,” Chinese Ministry of Transportation said. The quantity of oil spilled is amounted to be worth $60 millions, according to global crude oil rates.

Veteran Shrivallabh Vyas passes away at 60


Veteran actor Shrivallabh Vyas, who gave powerful performances in movies like Lagaan, Sarfarosh and Shool passed away at the age of 60. According to family and friends, Vyas who was suffering from a prolonged illness died in Jaipur. He had suffered from a brain stroke in 2008, while shooting for a film after which he was bedridden. The actor who had retired from acting the same year, had delivered occasional stint in theater plays, regional cinema and television as well. Vyas is survived by his wife and two daughters
