President Kovind disqualifies 20 MLAs of AAP, party cries foul
President Ram Nath Kovind on Sunday approved the disqualification of 20 MLAs of the Aam Aadmi party for holding ‘office of profit’. Acting on the Election Commission’s recommendation, dated January 19, the President issued a statement through the Law Ministry disqualifying the legislators reliable for holding offices for financial benefit. Amongst the oust ministers includes Kejriwal’s close aide Transport Minister Kailash Gahlot. Calling it an ‘unconstitutional’ and ‘undemocratic’ move AAP leader Gopal Rai said: "the party will knock on the doors of HC and even SC if required". With this move, the Delhi assembly will have to hold by-polls for the now vacant seats._____________________________
OP Rawat appointed new Chief Election Commissioner
Election Commissioner Om Prakash Rawat was promoted to the post of Chief Election Commissioner of India, succeed from Achal Kumar Joti on Sunday. The retired IAS officer of 1977 batch, Madhya Pradesh cadre has held important portfolios in the central and state government. He has been the Secretary in Ministry of heavy industries and public enterprises and also the Director of the Defence Ministry (1993). At a time when Joti is retiring from the commission with the disqualification of 20 Aam Aadmi Party MLAs, Rawat had on April 20, 2017, recused himself from all AAP related cases after Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal had questioned his alliance with Madhya Pradesh CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan.

Delhi Factory Fire: Owner who ran it illegally, arrested
Owner of Delhi’s ill-fated firecracker factory in Bawana, Manoj Jain was arrested on Sunday by the city police. The accident that claimed 17 lives, was at a firecracker unit in Bawana industrial area, where, at the time of the mishap, a packaging activity was being done. The fire quickly spread through the storage unit to the two-storey building, killing 10 women and 7 men. Jain has been charged with culpable homicide not amounting to murder and negligent conduct with respect to fire or combustible material. “Arrested the person who took this place on rent in a January 1 and had been running it illegally,” Delhi Police PRO said.

5 dead in terrorists attack on luxury Kabul hotel
5 people were killed and 100 were rescued by the Afghanistan police force as the 12-hour terror siege ended at Kabul's Inter-Continental Hotel on Sunday. Several were reportedly taken as hostages by armed terrorists who stormed into a five-star hotel in Kabul, on Saturday night. According to eyewitnesses, a total of 4 gunmen entered the hotel, through the kitchen and open fired on an ongoing seminar at 9.28 pm. At 10:49 am, the Special Task Force successfully eliminated all the terrorists. This was the second time the hotel has come under a terror attack, after 2011 when 9 members of the Taliban killed at least 21 people.
