Rahul files nomination papers for Congress Party President
The elevation of Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi was initiated as he filed the nomination papers for the election of the Party President on Monday. Donning a ‘tilak’ on his head, the Congress scion reached the AICC headquarters to finish the procedures, where former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was present as his proposer. Veteran leaders chimed in to wish the Gandhi scion, with Punjab CM Amrinder Singh saying Rahul would make a good PM and former Finance Minister P Chindambaran saying he would unify the country. Rebel Congress leader, Shehzadh Poonawalla said the party will place a dummy candidate to make the election look like a genuine one.
MP Assembly passes death penalty bill for convicts of rape against minor girls
On Monday, the Madhya Pradesh Assembly unanimously passed the bill for declaring death penalty for those accused in rape charges of minor girls. The State Government on November 26 had proposed for a law awarding ‘hanged till death’ sentence for rapists of girls below the age of 12 years. Commenting on the historic move taken by his government, Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said “People who rape 12-year-old girls are not humans but devil. They do not deserve the right to live.” Termed the Dand Vidhi (Madhya Pradesh Sanshodhan) Vidheyak, 2017, the bill will be passed for the President’s approval to become a law.

PM Modi congratulates Congress on ‘Aurangzeb Raj’
Prime Minister on Monday took a jibe on Rahul Gandhi’s elevation as Congress President by calling it ‘Aurangzeb’s Raj’. The PM drew the sharp words referring to Congress leader Mani Shankar AIyar’s comparison of the Congress president election to that of the Mughal rule. Earlier Aiyar, in defiance of Rahul’s elevation had said, “When Aurangzeb came in place of Shah Jahan did any election happen? It was known that the king’s throne will go to the heir.” Addressing a rally in Dharampur, Gujarat, PM Modi said, “I congratulate Congress party on their ‘Aurangzeb Raj.’ For us, the well-being of the people matters," he said.

Accused doctors fired in Delhi’s Max hospital row
Delhi’s Max Healthcare, sacked its two doctors for wrongly declaring two newborns dead, who were later found to be alive. Delhi Police had served a notice to the hospital, seeking a detailed explanation on the November 30 incident, when a pair of newborn twins were declared dead, while one of them was stillborn. Later, the stillborn baby gained consciousness, which put the hospital under scanner. In a published statement, Max Healthcare said they have sacked, the accused Dr AP Mehta and Dr Vishal Gupta. The father of the infants, Ashish Kumar has also alleged that the doctors had demanded 50 lakhs to keep the babies alive.

US, South Korea start their largest joint air drill
The United States and North Korea on Monday began their largest ever joint air drill on Monday. These drills are being carried out in the south of the capital, Seoul. More than 200 aircrafts are involved in the five-day war games, including six F-22 Raptors and six F-35 stealth fighter jets. About 12,000 US military personnel are taking part.

49-year-old, Indian origin, New
York based financier Rohini Bhandari was killed in a shark attack, while scuba
diving in Costa Rica. Bhandari, who worked as a Wall Street private equity manager
had gone for a diving session in Cocos National Island Park in Costa Rica which
houses one of the most endangered species of sharks, the Tiger shark. Bhandari’s
body, upon rescue, was found with severe bite marks and could not be saved in
time. “Upon reaching the coast, the attack on the tourist was already serious,”
Costa Rica Environment Ministry reported. The Tiger shark species is found
along the Pacific Islands and known for their killer jaws.

Sensex, Nifty close flat, Infosys gains
The Indian indices closed marginally higher on Monday led by gains in Infosys. BSE Sensex closed higher by 36 points to 32,869, while the Nifty 50 rose 5.95 points to close at 10,127. Indiabulls, Hindalco and Zee entertainment gained the most while Coal India, Bajaj Finance and Sun Pharma lost the most.
