IDFC calls of $12 billion merger plan

The much awaited merger of IDFC and Shriram capital was called off on Monday by the former as the groups could not reach a common platform. The deal would have created a financial conglomerate so large that it could provide any financial aid, from insurance, banking to vehicle finance. "Despite best efforts, the two groups have not been able to reach an agreement on a mutually acceptable swap ratio," said an IDFC spokesperson. The life and general insurance units of Shriram capital would have merged with the bank, while Shriram Transport would have remained a separate unit of IDFC. Reportedly, Shriram group was not happy with the transport division becoming a private unit.
