Karnataka police on Wednesday recovered a CCTV footage outside slain journalist Gauri Lankesh’s house in Bengaluru that showed the unidentified assailant pumping bullets into her from a point blank range, media reports said. Lankesh, a Kannada journalist and staunch critic
of hate politics was shot seven times on Tuesday
night after she alighted from her car outside her house. A special investigation team has been ordered to probe her killing. Meanwhile, journalists and activists across the country across protested against the killing at various locations and asked the state and central governments to fasten the probe. Lankesh whose remains were lowered to the grave in Chamrajpet, Bengaluru was given a 21-gun salute by the state police.

SC directs Centre to take strict action against Gau-rakshaks
The Supreme
Court on Wednesday asked all states to take immediate steps to stop cow vigilantism and directed each state to appoint a senior officer in each district as a
‘nodal officer’ for the same. However, the court has stopped
petitioners for fighting over the matter and asked them to file a petition to question the large scale animal slaughter during Eid. The bench headed by chief
justice Dipak Misra, also asked the Centre to obtain information about the
steps being taken by them to prevent the problem. A total of 66 instances of
lynching which resulted in the death of women and minors, said Senior advocate
Indira Jaisingh, appearing for one of the petitioners.

on late Tuesday, shocked everyone in the nation, garnering reactions from
political factions. The Opposing parties and the Centre indulged in a war of words in Karnataka, with the BJP blaming the Congress led State government and vice
versa. Taking a direct swipe at the Centre, Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi said “Anyone who presents a different
ideology against the BJP-RSS has to face pressure, even death.” Hitting back at allegations, BJP minister Nitin Gadkari termed Gandhi's allegations as ‘nonsense’ and that
the BJP does not associate itself with any group that supports murder.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Aung San Suu Kyi hold bilateral talks
Starting off his two day meeting in Myanmar,
Prime Minister Narendra Modi held bilateral talks with State Counseller Aung
San Suu Kyi on Wednesday. The Prime Minister presented many policies, in lines
of his ‘Act East’ policy, promising to cooperate with Myanmar as a part of his
Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas plan. He also promised to free 40 Myanmar prisoners
lodged in different Indian prisons. He also added that any Myanmar citizen who
wants to visit India, will be granted gratis visas, which means they will can
avail it at no cost. “I am confident that in future we will work together to
create a strong and close partnership for mutual benefits,” Modi added.

Hurricane Irma creates havoc in Caribbean
The most powerful hurricane recorded in the
Atlantic Ocean, Hurricane Irma lashed across the Caribbean with full force on
Wednesday. The hurricane which is moving along at a speed of 185 mph (295 kph)
of sustained winds, is a Category 5 one, which had also affected the
communication among the islands. The eye of the hurricane passed through
Barbuda in early noon, ripping off roofs and sending debris flying. The
calamity is now travelling through the path of Puerto Rico, the Dominican
Republic, Haiti and Cuba, while striking Florida over the weekend. The National
Office of Disaster Services has commented that “it is too early to assess the
extent of damage.”

Ex-JD (U) leader’s son Rocky Yadav sentenced to life in Gaya road rage case
A Bihar district court sentenced to life ex-JD (U) MLC Manorama Devi's son
Rocky Yadav and 5-years imprisonment for his father Bindi Yadav in the Gaya road
rage case. The court also sentenced two other convicts to life imprisonment.
Rocky was convicted on August 31, for fatally shooting Aditya Sachdeva, son of
a Gaya-based businessman, after the Sachdeva's car overtook his luxury SUV on
May 7, 2016. Rocky’s father was charged in different sections of the law for
sheltering the perpetrators.

Lucknow Metro breaks down on its first day, Passengers stuck
The newly inaugurated Lucknow metro developed a technical problem in the middle of its first journey on Wednesday causing major embarrasment to the Yogi Adityanath government, media reports said. Hundreds of passengers were stuck for over an hour, till
a team of the Lucknow Metro Rail Corporation (LMRC) came to their help. The
metro was inaugurated by the Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath with Union Home
Minister Rajnath Singh on Tuesday. Meanwhile, some of the Samajwadi Party (SP)
workers protested outside the station and clashed with the security officials of the Lucknow metro, after
they were allegedly stopped from boarding it. The forces had to resort to mild
lathicharge to disperse the SP workers.

SC allows 13-year-old rape survivor to abort 32-week foetus
The Supreme Court on Thursday allowed a 13-year-old rape survivor from Mumbai to terminate her
32-week-old pregnancy after taking note of a medical report that said that the pregnancy endangered her life. The class seven student's mother had gone to the court for permission to abort the
foetus. The girl was way past India's 20-week legal limit after which abortions
are only allowed where there is a danger to both the lives. The victim's father's
colleagues had been arrested on charges of raping her, media reports said.
"It has been emotionally draining for the girl's parents as their child is
pregnant and they are unable to cope up with this fact," Sneha
Mukherjee, the child’s lawyer.
