Bengaluru Journalist Gauri Lankesh shot dead, Protests erupt

  

Senior Journalist and activist from Karnataka Gauri Lankesh was on Tuesday shot to death outside her residence in Bengaluru. Ms.Lankesh was shot by unidentified assailants although the motive of the murder is still unclear. At least four bullets were fired out of which one hit her on the forehead and two entered her chest, media reports quoting police sources said. Ms.Lankesh who edited and ran a Kannada newspaper Gauri Lankesh Patrike had been a staunch critic of the right-wing forces and had even been convicted in a defamation case filed in 2015 by a Karnataka BJP MLA. She had reported how three BJP leaders had duped a jeweller for 1 lakh rupees. Although she managed to get an anticipatory bail in the case, she had continued to receive death threats, multiple media reports quoting Gauri said on Tuesday. As the news of her death spread on Twitter, journalists and activists expressed anger and shock and condemned the 'right-wing' forces over the incident. Multiple protests have been planned across the country even as Karnataka government has handed over the probe to CID.

Modi visits Myanmar, might discuss Rohingya and infrastructure

PM Narendra Modi on Tuesday landed in Myanmar for a three-day visit starting on Tuesday amidst the current crisis surrounding Rohingya Muslims who are fleeing the country following the ethnic violence that has erupted. Modi is expected to discuss the Rohingya crisis and India's capacity building measures and infrastructure projects with Myanmar's State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi. This is Modi's first bilateral visit to India's eastern neighbor. Currently Myanmar’s security forces have launched a crackdown in the country's Rakhine state, that to led to fleeing of around 125000 Rohingyas from the country to Bangladesh. In terms of infrastructure, India has committed grant-in-aid assistance amounting to Rs 4,000 crore to Myanmar, out of a total commitment of around $1.7 billion.

BRICS Summit 2017: India and China decide to resolve Doklam differences


On the last day of BRICS Summit, PM Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping decided to put behind the tensions between the two countries over the recent Doklam standoff. ““This was not a backward looking but a forward-looking discussion. The Doklam issue was discussed and both the countries agreed that it should not recur and that differences must be handled with mutual respect," said Foreign Secretary S Jaishankar to the media after the bilateral talks. Earlier Chinese President Xi Jingping said that “China is prepared to work with India to seek guidance from the five principles of Panchsheel.”

UP: Substance found in assembly not PETN, Forensic Director suspended

The UP government on Tuesday suspended the Lucknow’s Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) Director, Shiv Bihari Upadhyay after the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL), Hyderabad confirmed that the suspicious substance that was recovered from the assembly on July 12 was not high-potential explosive PETN, but silicon oxide. Upadhyay was suspended over charges of submitting an incomplete, misleading, inauthentic and defective report on recovery of the suspicious substance from Vidhan Bhavan. The state government has ordered a probe against Upadhyay. The officials said, he allegedly submitted fake reports regarding laboratory test and gave benefits to the laboratory employees illegally.

ED seized Lalu Yadav’s daughter Misa Bharti’s Delhi Farmhouse 

The Enforcement Directorate on Tuesday has seized a farmhouse located in Delhi’s Bijwasan owned by Misa Bharti, daughter of RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav, in connection with a case of money laundering. The ED has found that the house has been bought by “proceeds of crime”. The house is in the name of M/s Mishail Packers and Printers Pvt Ltd., and was purchased using Rs. 1.2 crore involved in money laundering in the year 2008-09. Mishail Packers is owned by Misa and her husband Shailesh. Shailesh is one of the directors in the company.

Farukkhabad child deaths: Doctors on strike after authorities suspend CMO, CMS


A day after 49 newborns passed away in a government hospital in Uttar Pradesh's Farrukhabad, senior doctors went on mass strike to protest against government action on CMO and CMS of the Ram Manohar Lohiya hospital. The CMO and CMS were removed from their posts and the doctors are demanding the FIRs against CMO and CMS to be plunged. The doctors have claimed that their strike will continue for next two days and have planned resigning from their posts collectively if the government does not budge. The strike has severely affected the Health and Medical services in Farrukhabad.

BJP ‘Mangalore Chalo’ Rally evokes clash with Bengaluru police

The ‘Mangalore Chalo’ rally held in Karnataka on Tuesday resulted in violent clashes between the Bengaluru police and members of the BJP Yuva Morcha, and was flagged off within minutes since its start. 500 protesters, including Karnataka Home Minister R Ashoka and MLA Shobha Karandlaje were taken into preventive custody, after the Congress led state government alleged that they have received no official orders to hold the rally. The 200 bike borne Yuva Morcha workers held the rally against the alleged killings of the two BJP members in the state. Commenting on the same, Chief Minister Siddaramiah said the said protests were done to ease traffic issues.

Yogi Adityanath files nomination with 2 MLAs for UP bypolls

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, on Tuesday, filed in his nomination for the upcoming Legislative Council by-polls. The seat to be applied for by the CM is that of Yashwant Sinha of Samajwadi Party, who vacated the seat on grounds of his resignation. Deputy Ministers Keshav Prasad Maurya and Dinesh Sharma, along with ministers Mohsin Raza and Swatantra Singh, also submitted their nomination papers. The Election Commission reported that both the polling and the counting would take place on September 15. Former Chief Ministers Akhilesh Yadav and Mayawati had also filed their nomination for the Upper House.

111 MLAs show of support to E Palaniswami

As a development, in the ensuing war of factions in Chennai, a major boost was received by Chief Minister E Palaniswami on Tuesday as 111 MLAs attended his meeting. Another step came as forty five districts secretaries out of the fifty in Chennai, extended their support to the Chief Minister. Speaking to the media, Jayakumar of AIADMK said that nine members of the Dinakaran camp, along with three members of the allies of the ruling party have also “whole-heartedly’ extended their support to the Chief Minister.

US readies itself for Hurricane Irma; 60 dead as Hurricane Harvey recedes


The death toll, in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey rose to 60 people on Tuesday, as the water level receded from the tragedy stricken Houston, US. While the numbers stood still, warnings has been issued in the wake of another approaching calamity, Hurricane Irma. The hurricane, which has been described belonging to Category 4, has set off alarms in parts of the Caribbean and Florida, according to National Hurricane Centre (NHC). “The storm has been packing top sustained winds of 220km/h. Additional strengthening is forecast during the next 48 hours,” the NHC added.

India further solidified their place in the group league encounter of the Asian Cup qualifying round after substitute striker Balwant Singh’s second half brace downed Macau. Macau’s defensive line stood firm keeping India out for most of the early parts of the game.
