The landmark judgment on Right to Privacy was finally released by the Supreme Court on Thursday, and immediately became the source of debate between political parties. Speaking on behalf of the government, Union Law and Justice and IT Minister, Ravi Shankar Prasad said that the SC has affirmed what the government said in the Aadhaar Bill. However, considering privacy as a Fundamental right, he subjected it to “reasonable” restrictions. Congress Vice President, however, called it a ‘victory for every Indian and hit out at the BJP saying this has been a sound rejection of the BJP’s ideology of suppression through surveillance. CPI(M) leader Sitaram Yechury took to Twitter and congratulated all those who “fought the government sinister designs.”__________________
No durga immersions on Muharram, say WB CM Mamata
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday announced that all Durga immersions slated for October 1 need to be put on hold to ensure a smoother celebration for Muharram celebrations. Immersions will now be made till 6pm on September 30 and then directly on October 2 to avoid any clash and rush, and to ensure a smoother celebrations of the two festivals, Banerjee added. “Some people will try to create trouble on Hindu-Muslim grounds. Every religion is ours. But if there is a problem while a procession is passing a puja pandal, we will all be affected”, said Banerjee in a meeting held for the Durga Puja organizers, leaders of the Muslim community and other religions. The BJP's Bengal chief Dilip Ghosh however jumped to criticise Mamata and expressed his outrage on Facebook and said,“Is West Bengal gradually heading towards Talibani rule?”___________________
RBI to issue Rs 200 notes from Friday: Report
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) will now issue the first- ever Rs 200 notes from Friday, media reports quoting RBI officials said. “The Rs 200 denomination banknotes are in the Mahatma Gandhi (New) Series, bearing signature of Dr. Urjit R. Patel, RBI Governor”, the RBI press release. The Rs 200 note circulation is mainly to bridge the shortage of small currency denomination. The base color of the new note is bright yellow. For the visually-impaired, the note contains a raised emblem of Mahatma Gandhi's portrait and Ashoka Pillar, besides other special features.___________________
Jio Phone pre-booking begins
The pre-booking for the much awaited 'zero-rupees' phone by the Reliance Jio started from Thursday at a price of Rs 500. At the Reliance Industries' 40th Annual General Meeting, company's chairman Mukesh Ambani had said that a refundable security deposit of Rs 1,500 will be taken for the device. However, deposit will be refunded after three years. To book the device, consumers can visit Jio.com and MyJio mobile application -- or offline Jio retailers, multi-brand device retailers and Reliance Digital store. The payment can be made through UPI, credit card, debit card and net banking. After payment of booking amount, the customer receives a pop up of confirmation and a SMS.___________________
Kerala RSS worker accused of murder of Muslim convert, dead
A RSS worker accused of the murder of a Muslim convert, was found dead in Kerala’s Malappuram district, on Thursday morning. He was accused of the murder of Faisal in November 2016, however, he was out on bail. Vipin, the RSS worker’s body was sent to the Tirur District Hospital for the autopsy. Faisal was found dead in a drain in Kodhini on November 19, 2016. Vipin and eight others were arrested days after the murder. A fresh round of tension has erupted between RSS and CPM workers in the Kodinji area and police have now tightened the security to lower down the temperatures in a state that has seen a spate of political violence.___________________
“No liquor ban within city limits”, SC clarifies
The Supreme Court, on Thursday clarified that the sale of liquor is not banned for areas that are under 500 meters of state and national highways, falling within the city limits. The verdict has been a huge relief for the liquor and hospitality industry that had suffered a huge blow after the ban was implemented in April. The verdict, taken by a bench headed by Chief Justice JS Khehar, states that the order of 15 December 2016 on the liquor was aimed at the outlets that are in highways connecting towns, cities and villages. The enabled liquor vends will be operational once they apply for license renewal.________________
Shashi Shekhar arrested by CBI over charges of bribery
The CBI on Thursday arrested Assistant Director of Enforcement Directorate (ED), Shashi Shekhar in Patna, following charges of bribery to the tune of Rs 10 lakh. Shekhar, was caught accepting a bribe, through a businessman and had conspired along with another individual and taken benefit of his status as a public servant. Shekhar has also been accused of taking illegal gratifications while discharging his duties. The CBI has registered cases against Agarwal and another other group of unknown individuals, the investigation of which has been given to the Patna Deputy Superintendent of Police._________________
China warns India over Ladakh crisis
In another warning issued to India, China charged India of worsening the Doklam Dispute by deciding to build a road near Pangong Lake, Ladakh. The Home Ministry of India had recently approved the project of constructing a road link connecting Hot Springs to Marsimik Lake, where the military troops of both the countries had a scuffle recently. Speaking on the matter, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying commented that India has slapped itself by deepening the already tensed situation. "The current road construction in that area by the Indian side is not conducive to peace and stability in the area, Chunying added.________________
