30 children die in Gorakhpur hospital in 48 hrs after disruption in oxygen supply



Around 30 children died in Gorakhpur’s BRD Medical College on Friday after a private firm contracted in supplying oxygen cylinders allegedly withdrew over non-payment of outstanding dues to the tune of Rs 67 lakh, media reports said. Most deaths were reported from the neonatal and encephalitis wards, media reports added. However, the state’s Director General of Medical Education, Dr KK Gupta, denied reports that oxygen supply in the hospital had stopped and claimed “BRD medical college has a gas plant as well.” The hospital is in Uttar Pradesh's Gorakhpur, the consitutency of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. Yogi during his recent visit to Gorakhpur had noted the lack of stock supply for encephalitis wards. Gorakhpur has seen at least 114 deaths due to Acute Encephalitis Syndrome (AES) in 2017.

Pahlaj Nihalani sacked from CBFC, Lyricist Prasoon Joshi to replace him

Censor Board Chief Pahlaj Nihalani was on Friday sacked by the Government and replaced by lyricist and film-maker Prasoon Joshi, media reports quoting sources said.Nihlani who has been involved in multiple controversies was accused of treating Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) as his personal fiefdom and was accused by filmmakers of demanding irrational cuts. Madhur Bhandarkar's "Indu Sarkar" which depicted the ‘Emergency’ and "Lipstick under My Burqa" which explores female sexuality were the recent controversies that Nihalani and his team members were involved in.In June 2016, he asked the makers of Udta Punjab to drop the reference of Punjab from the movie title and asked for 89 cuts which included cuss words.

Sensex, Nifty Post Worst Weekly Loss in 18 Months 

After a series of disappointing sessions, the Indian benchmarks disappointed the investors further today by posting its worst loss since 18 months. Bad corporate earnings and the rising geopolitical tension were the major drivers of this loss. Sensex dropped as much 1.07% or 336 points to 31,194 in early trade, hitting its lowest level since 7 July, while Nifty fell as much as 1.18% or 115 points to 9,704, its lowest intra-day level since 10 July. For the week, the Sensex plunged down 3.4 percent or 1112 points and the Nifty shed 356 points or 3.5 percent.

Indian Army increases troops along the China border near Sikkim, Arunachal

India has increased its troop presence along the eastern border with China and also raised its operational readiness amidst its two-month long standoff with the dragon over a road it wants to build through Bhutan near the Doklang, media reports told two news agencies on Friday. The report also mentioned that 'caution levels' among Army personnels have been raised along the 1400-km-long border although Army officials refused to comment on the issue. Neither China nor India has refused to back down from the current tussle. On Thursday, Army sources had claimed that there was no chance of the tussle escalating any further.

Chandigarh Stalking: Police Find New Evidence, Extend Judicial Custody

A day after BJP chief's son Vikas Barala and his friend were arrested, the cops have claimed to have found new evidence nad have extended their judicial custody of the two accused. The police have reportedlty got enough evidence against the two men chasing and harassing the victim. Varnika Kundu, the daughter of a senior-cadre Haryana IAS officer, was chased by the two culprits in downtown Chandigarh late on August 4. Some media reports claimed that the cops have video evidence of their actions and have also found one video of them purchasing liquor from a shop. The duo has been charged with non-bailable charges under Section 365 and 511 of the IPC were added to the FIR.

Former V-P Hamid Ansari claims Muslim insecure in India, BJP hits back 


Outgoing Vice-President M. Hamid Ansari stirred up a debate on Thursday, after he claimed in a TV interview that there is a “feeling of unease  a sense of insecurity is creeping in”, among the Muslims in India. His comments stirred a hornet's nest as several BJP leaders took offense and hit back. “There is) no better country than India for Muslims and no better friend than Hindus”, said BJP leader Shahnawaz Hussain. Venkaiah Naidu, the swearing in Vice-President, called the whole instance as a ‘political propaganda’ of the view that there is a sense of insecurity among minorities in the country. Ansari also held a talk about several other issues currently persisting in the country, including the attacks on Africans in India.
